The ice breaks up on the river, and spring comes in cold water running slowly underneath the sound of tires on gravel roads. It comes too late for February’s dead, and it comes to scatter their ashes and smash their urns and you deserved to be chosen, and not just considered, and when God spoke a word upon the waters, he called to you by name.
Steve Passey is from Southern Alberta. He is the author of the collection Forty-Five Minutes of Unstoppable Rock (Tortoise books) and the novella Starseed (Seventh Terrace) and many other individual things.
