my whole body is a fife

by Mark DeCarteret

I wash the floor off my hands
& the roof off my sandals

*

a mosquito seeks out
the quiet of my ear

*

there will always be
walls says the wall

*

my own heart seems
the easiest to hear

*

I’ve just enough room in my head
to house one more enormous thought

Mark DeCarteret sang and played guitar and congas for a Catholic church folk group. And also sang and played guitar for Shim Jambs. On rare occasions he performs with the Dadaist troupe Carteret Voltaire. And on rarer occasions sings and plays drums with Codpiece.
